Nature at its Best

The Peloncillo and Chiricahua Mountains are sky islands set in grass and scrub desert, each with their own unique flora and fauna offering a wide range of interest to nature lovers. The rocky and majestic Chiricahuas rise to 10,000 feet offering various habitats from the riparian banks of Cave Creek where deciduous trees provide cover and food for many species, up to the rocky heights where Golden Eagle soar.

Nearby Portal is the small town at the entrance to Cave Creek Canyon and has a world-wide reputation for being one of the best birding destinations in North America. Desert birds, mountain birds and migratory species such as Humming Birds en route from Mexico to the North are all found in and around Portal. Five species of owls, including the amusing burrowing owl that bows politely when sighted, are just one of the delights awaiting birders. Elegant Trogons find their way to Cave Creek Canyon, one of the only places you'll find them in the United States.

The Peloncillos are gentler mountains but have their own charm and secret places that make an equestrian paradise. Rancho Hidlago adjoins thousands of acres of federal land that riders can explore at their leisure. Trails for novices and rides to test the experienced are all there waiting for you.

Most people don't expect to find waterfowl and wading birds in the desert, but Rancho Hidalgo has a large pond that several species of ducks and geese frequent at certain times of year - a true oasis for these species. In winter, Willcox Playa becomes a large shallow lake where cranes and many other species abound.

The birding is so good it is easy to overlook other wildlife but the mountains and desert each have much else to offer. From Cottontails and Jack Rabbits through Coyotes, Coati and Javelina to Black Bears, Mountain Lions and Jaguar, the patient observer can be well-rewarded with a fascinating insight into the lives of these shy and not-so-shy inhabitants. Butterflies and Dragonflies add a lovely touch of colour and interest in their seasons.

The desert is far from dead and hosts a wide range of plants and flowers. The desert blooming in spring is a glorious sight and wildflowers appear at different heights and different times in the mountains. Watching the seasonal changes is one of the delights of living in this part of the world.
