Views around the Ranch

View to the Chiricahuas

Rancho Hidalgo is a mixture of high-level desert, pasture, farmland and rocky outcrops. Mixed vegetation sets off this view with the Chiricahua Mountains in the background.

Typical pasture with grazing horses

These existing inhabitants let their curiosity get the better of them and they soon came over to see what we were up to. This is natural grass which provides grazing for much of the year. Substantial water rights will allow it to be maintained all year round.

Fogbow at Rancho Hidalgo

We called this a 'fogbow' when we found ourselves in a very shallow fog bank one morning. The fogbow looked like a regular rainbow but without the colour; we could see a secondary at times but it didn't show on the photos.

Test 1

One of the two existing farm houses on the ranch. Rooster the caretaker lives in this one with his family. He told us about the riding he's been doing in the Peloncillo Mountains and the Native American dwellings he has found.

Geese taking off from the pond

There were about a hundred geese on the pond the first time I visited it. They seemed wary of people but returned after a while and settled down again.

Gene in fog

Volcanic rocks produced by a volcano away to the south litter the ground. They line the banks around the pond adding character and making a great adventure playground.
